Adaptation on the ground

Presentations from a recent Climate Change Task Force Meeting are now available. Challenges are seen in the perspectives of the UNFCCC-process and the new Danida Development Strategy.

- There might be a potential to draw on Danish solutions for adaptation and mitigation projects in other countries. Danish experiences from e.g. robust solutions in the water and energy sectors may help to address some of the challenges that exist elsewhere. This notably relates  to the more practical questions regarding good governance, cooperation between different institutions etc.

This was one of the main points from a Climate Change Task Force Meeting in Copenhagen 23 March 2010. About 40 experts from different Danish universities and other research institutions, consultants, authorities etc. discussed and shared knowledge on climate change challenges in relation to land and water, health, forestry, and development of low carbon societies.

Presentations from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Danish resource base in relation to research on climate change helped stimulate discussions of the new Danida strategy and for Danish development cooperation in relation to climate change adaptation and sustainable environments.

Chief Advisor Povl Frich from the Danish Information Center on Climate Change Adaptation gave a presentation: "Adaptation on the ground in Denmark and abroad". Povl presented a number of ‘win-win’ examples, where synergy exist between mitigation and adaptation. He also discussed the possibility of ‘win-win-win’ situations, where mitigation and adaptation actions are turned into good business cases. Povl finally underlined that adaptation needs to be addressed here and now on the ground in practice, and not just as a future concern.
